Let's Talk Storytelling
How can photography really capture a unique story?
Hey there!
You may be seeing all of this mention of storytelling through photography with my recent name change and rebrand but you may be wondering, what does that really mean? What’s so special about photography that tells a story rather then just looks picture-perfect? I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out what my connection to the art of photography is. What really is my passion? And it’s exactly this.
Turning Photography into Poetry
Now, the art of making portraits as beautiful and perfect as you can is definitely a skill. In no way am I saying that I think my view on what photography is, is the best. But, this is where my passion lies. To me, this is where photography means the most. Just as I enjoy the art of painting and creating things, I believe that photography falls right into that same concept.
When turning moments into picture, there is a lot to think about. The symbolism, the cinematography, the moment itself. So, let’s say that we want to create something extra special for a couple’s photoshoot. In the past, all I would really do is figure out the day of the photoshoot, recommend some places that I generally think are really pretty and then we would set off to that photoshoot. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that but I believe there should be so much more.
Instead, we will collaborate! I will send out a specialized questionnaire to get the conversation going. From it, I can learn all sorts of broad and little details that can make the photoshoot EXTRA special. Now, instead of just choosing a place thats pretty, i’m thinking about where they first met or maybe a favorite hobby they have together. With this new info, I will reach out with a couple of different ideas on what I think would be perfect for especially them. Instead of going to a picture perfect location, we are setting off to somewhere that feels comfy to them, like their first date. Imagine how much more love can go into portraits that are set up to truly be something special.
The more detail and little things you enjoy that you put into the questionnaire, the more I get to be creative and figure out something truly unique and special. Not only will it be a picture; it’s a story, it’s poetry, it’s different and most importantly, it’s yours 🖤
Symbolism
Symbolism is a very unique way of storytelling. Sometimes it’s more subtle and sometimes you really have to think about it. The beauty of it is, in most cases you can interpret symbolism in multiple different ways.
Now, i’m definitely going to sound like an english teacher here. I mean, we all have read that book in english class. The teacher is going on about what the different colors mean and what they symbolize in that time period. Yada yada yada… And we think to ourselves, does the author really mean that? Or do they just like the color red?? And there it is! The meaning of said book being interpreted in two different ways. The english teacher, interpreting it in a way that is meant to teach you deep critical thinking and the art of symbolism vs a more straight-forward and simple approach.
This same thought process can be applied to the different details in a photograph. In art. I want to use symbols, colors, and motion to create something that is truly poetry. Your story, captured in a way never before.
As an art geek, I could go on and on about the little things that create a story. I mean, not to boast but in my past I have taken many art classes, film classes, graphic design classes, and now the experience of being a photographer. I feel they may all be mashing together in my mind. But are all things that I am truly passionate about!
Thank you always for being such a big supporter in my business. I would not be here without you and your support 🫶🏻
Have a beautifully unique day,
